Purpose
The Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse is a group of
individuals representing various agencies in the region of
Peel. This active committee's mandate is to to promote a
comprehensive and effective response to woman abuse in the
region of Peel.
Brief History
The Peel Committee Against Women Abuse has been in
existence since 1984. The committee has grown and developed
through community consultations, conferences, workshops and
planning. The committee has received financial support from
the Trillium Foundation, the Ministry of Community & Social
Services. PCAWA has also received project funding from the
United Way of Peel, Canadian Women's Foundation, Ontario
Women's Directorate, Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and
Recreation.
The Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse assisted in the
establishment of woman abuse protocols in hospitals with the
assistance from the Ministry of Health; have facilitated
police training and workshops to service providers; enhanced
community education and awareness through the distribution
of resources, events, workshops and conferences all centered
around violence against women and children; developed a
Safety Plan for women abuse survivors; developed resources
in up to eleven languages; implemented training and outreach
initiatives to several ethno-specific communities; developed
a Woman Abuse Protocol that consists of guidelines for a
coordinated response system for woman abuse survivors in the
Region of Peel. In 1993, the committee received the
Accessibility of the Year Award from the Canadian Hearing
Society of Peel, for ensuring that deaf and hard of hearing
women have full access to shelters and counselling
services..
The Committee
The Committee consists of forty-five member
agencies in Peel that are directly involved, or concerned
with, the issue of women abuse. These agency representatives
work together to promote a more effective and coordinated
response to women abuse in the region of Peel.
Currently, the Committee has a number of
working sub-committees that include the Woman Abuse Protocol
Subcommittee, the Multicultural Subcommittee, the Children
Exposed to Woman Abuse Subcommittee, and the Judicial
Subcommittee.
The Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse also works closely
with the Peel Committee on Sexual Assault (PCSA). PCAWA and
PCSA have two joint subcommittees, including Joint
Education/Prevention Subcommittee and the Joint Advocacy
Subcommittee, and work together on several community
initiatives.
In addition to the work of the subcommittees, the Peel
Committee Against Woman Abuse is involved with many relevant
community initiatives such as Peel Peace Campaign,
Anti-Racism Coalition of Peel, South Asian Family Violence
Response Team Project, the Domestic Violence Court Advisory
Committee and Fair Share for Peel.
Structure
The subcommittees and working groups are accountable to
the main committee. The executive committee consists of The
Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasure, Coordinator and two additional
members. The role of the executive committee is to supervise
and provide support to the Coordinator, to make interim
decisions on behalf of the Committee and to manage the
finances.
Terms of Reference
1. To facilitate coordination and linkages of existing
services in Peel for families and individuals experiencing
the effects of woman abuse by soliciting and encouraging
agency and organizational input and support for a
comprehensive, integrated model for services.
2. To identify community resources, service needs and
gaps in Peel for such families including immigrant and
visible minorities, women with disabilities, francophones,
native women, isolated and rural women.
3. To advocate that anti-racism and anti-oppression
policies, procedures and practices are an integral part of
the Peel community's response to woman abuse.
4. To encourage and facilitate ongoing training
opportunities for member agency staff which will in turn
benefit the community.
5. To liase with and recommend service priorities for
funders.
6. To increase community awareness through education
including proactive education for children and youth.
7. To ensure accountability to consumers of woman abuse
services through their involvement in the Committee's work.
8. To encourage and facilitate networking and information
sharing among member agencies.
9. To advocate for social change and for the elimination
of violence against women.
